Of course, "hate" isn't the best word to describe the awkward gift-search that comes around every year. Yes, we promise ourselves to pay attention "next year" and find that one perfect gift that Mom will absolutely love to have (and use). It's a slippery slope, though: Spend too much money and Mom gives you the "You shouldn't have spent so much money on me" speech!
If you stick to her clear and detailed instructions, and give her "just a card," there's still that nagging feeling that she deserves more. . . even though she'll never admit to that!
My mother was big into those "cryptic crossword" books, known as "Cryptograms" in some parts. I knew she enjoyed finishing each puzzle book, and it was easy to accessorize the "no brainer" gift with some nice pens or pencils, or maybe some fancy chocolates. Although she's passed, I can't walk by a bookstore without thinking I should check for her favorite puzzle books.
So, what to do?
So many Moms garden and are active backyard bird-watchers. If your mom has ever held you hostage with a long an
d drawn out anecdote about a squirrel, raccoon, or baby bird, that's Mom sending up a balloon that she'll love a nature-related gift.
But, not so fast. . .
you don't want to breeze into your local hardware store and grab the first odd-looking item with a bird sticker on it. There are so many versions and styles of bird feeders, garden doo-dad
s, bird seed and hummingbird feeders that the selection can be paralyzing. Best to chat with Mom about what she likes and the kind of nature-related gift she "wants."
If all of the online-shopping choices are overwhelming, I can direct you to one online store where you'll find the kind of nature-related gifts that will bring a smile to Mom's face
Check out the That's Our Nature store, where some of my "cutest" and "naturally funny" bird and animal characters like "The World's Cutest Squirrel" or "The Colorful Gull" characters take center stage on everything from a fridge magnet, beach tote and nature journals to tank tops, keepsake boxes and mugs. And don't forget the card!
