Its hard to ignore a " pink elephant in the room."

That's a combination of  "elephant in the room" ( which is supposed to mean ignoring what is right in front of you) and  "seeing pink elephants" which was once a common saying to describe DTs (delirium tremens) which are hallucinations brought on by alcohol withdrawal.  See more at Wikipedia.orgThese are insidious because no one seems willing to correct someone when they hear or read instances of such dys-idiom-lexia.I think part of the blame lies with google and other blessings of the internet age. It's too cumbersome to text a correction to someone, and the huge social network sites have enabled these corrupted idioms to prosper and spread. . .
Like wild horses on fire
Here are some more examples, which aren't difficult to find:

"there was a pit in my stomach"

which makes me imagine an overgrown peach pit,  stuck somewhere in the duodenum.

What are they trying to say? I'll bet its:

I felt it in the pit of my stomach.

to describe that feeling of dread/anxiety/despair.Recently, I collapsed in paroxysms of laughter when I heard one of the stars of  the "Bad Girls Club" exclaim:
"I trust him like a hole in wall!"
(feel free to insert your own joke here).

And the verbal stew continues to get fouled. . .

With the narrator explaining how important attention to detail is for the State Troopers in Alaska, an officer states:
These guys are really pushing the gauntlet.
Pushing the envelope?   Running the Gauntlet?  That's certainly not attention to detail.phil_sexrehabFrom Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew, find it on VH1
"My mother passing away, it was like the pink elephant in the room"

Here's a new one:

"My stomach is in my throat right now"Sounds a lot like gastric reflux to me!  Maybe what he meant to say is "my heart is in my throat"
