These two birds have shared the same backyard habitat for the past few years. Each species has its own feeding style; the Downy Woodpecker climbs head-first up a tree, pecking and searching for protein-rich insects either under the bark or in dead wood.
The White Breasted Nuthatch has very strong leg muscles which are needed to support his "gravity-defying" style of finding food. In contrast to the woodpecker, the nuthatch gets all of the nice bits that can only be found from a top-down angle
They usually co-exist quite nicely, allowing each other a wide berth, so it was surprising to be able to capture this shot with both of them in the frame and interacting. You can find more examples of "avian antics" here.
