I don't know whats more distrubing to me: the images of tortured souls that are stuck in my mind, or the fact that I can watch those "save the children" campaigns and have little or no emotional reaction. We've all seen those commercials: The one with the haunting music, the one-eyed cat, the cage stuffed with dogs. The clip of the gray thoroughbred, curious and apprehensive as it prepares to be slaughtered; I can't bear to watch them anymore.I understand the use of powerful and disturbing images to motivate people to contribute to the cause, but its such a short-sighted campaign. How many people respond with a donation, then pat themselves on the back because they've done their part? How many impressions (that's advertising talk) will it take for viewers to be desensitized to these horrors? No amount of money or awarenress can fix the real horror: an increasing number of people unable to experience empathy
