Takeover Target injured in July Cup
Takeover Target's rags-to-riches tale has captured the hearts of racing fans across Australia and the world.
His trainer and owner Joe Janiak was working as a taxi driver when he bought the horse for just $1250 in 2003 after he had been cast aside by a Sydney trainer as a result of a knee injury.
Under Janiak's careful training -- Takeover Target became a winner, earning more than $6 million in prize money.
The rise of the little bay gelding had all the makings of a Hollywood film and it was no surprise when it was announced earlier this year that a script had been written chronicling the story of the horse and his owner, with Russell Crowe allegedly in talks for the role of Janiak.
Janiak, who nicknamed his favourite horse 'Boof' and often called him his 'best mate', was reportedly too upset to talk to the media after the injury.
He is believed to be at Takeover Target's side at the Newmarket Veterinary Hospital where the horse had surgery.
