" . . .a spectacular performance. . . an impossible win"
--Tom Durkin, race caller for the 135th Derby
"An eye popper and a jaw dropper "
--Gary Siebel, TVG
Mine That Bird proved that the obligatory Derby preps aren't the best or only indicator of which horse will win the "Derby, but more of an opportunity to separate the runners into groups that people can understand
, like- should win,
- should lose,
- it depends
What will they have to talk about now that Mine That Bird has shown that its not aboutwinning the toughest prep race, having the perfect "work" prior to the race, experience on dirt surfaces,, whether the horse is "peaking" at the right time, which horse had to travel the greatest distance to get to the race. . .you get the point. Perhaps race "fans" as opposed to "handicappers" are more willing to concede what has been shown time and time again: Any horse, in any race, can cross the finish line first, even if everyone agrees that its an impossibility.
