The Girl vs. the Boys

I've heard a few people crying "foul" over the latest drama regarding the decision to race Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness. Someone remarked that this episode will make people think that there's some funny business going on, an air of corruption. . . And this might hurt racing. Are they kidding? Corruption has always existed in the sport, and to pretend otherwise is ludicrous. This time it became public, and that's the only part of it that makes this drama remarkable. Most race fans know that It's NOT that fillies shouldn't run with colts. . . its a matter of PR and public perception. . .a new concept for a lot of people involved in this incredible sport. The "general public" only know what they've seen--I'm talking about people who watch the 'Derby because its a great party theme. . and maybe tune in to the Preakness to see if there might be the crowing of a champion.Like many things, its about expectations and education. To this day, I run into people who are angry about Eight Belles. . .in their view, she was euthanized too quickly, for the "insurance" money and didn't want to spend a fortune to "fix" her . . just like Barbaro! We really need to manage the expectations of the "general public," becasue the response to Eight Belles points out that the masses are very powerful, and can force the powers that be to make changes
