I'm sure you've noticed that the Triple Crown drought has caused many to call for changes that would, inevitably, drastically change the odds that we'll see another TC winner in our lifetime.

Suggestions include:

  • Shortening the distance in the Belmont (its now 1.5 miles)
  • Increasing the time between races(currently 3 G1 stakes in 5 weeks)
  • Requiring horses to run in all 3 legs of the Triple Crown (cancelling out the "fresh horses" advantage)

Here's an idea I haven't heard discussed yet:

Make weight allowances based on the horse's participation in each of the 3 legs of the Triple Crown. Personally, I've never put too much stock in the idea that a few pounds up or down will materially effect the outcome, but I'm no expert, either.I don't believe there should be major alterations to the Triple Crown tradition, but compared to other kooky suggestions I've heard, this seems the most "doable" and perhaps the least controversial.
