Horse euthanized
Insider, the 7-5 favorite in yesterday’s second race, became the fourth horse euthanized since July 19, after suffering compound fractures of the left hind leg. Insider, trained by Mike Mitchell and ridden by Garrett Gomez, dueled for the lead for much of the 1 1/16-mile turf race before being pulled up suddenly on the far turn.
The 3-year-old, Florida-bred gelding was vanned off the track and euthanized after the extent and severity of the injuries had been determined.
It was the first fatal breakdown on the turf course. Of the three others, one was in morning training and two in afternoon races on the main track.
