These photos of a ring around the moon were taken Sunday, Jan 31, 2001, (shortly after midnight)  south of Boston, looking to the south/southeast. It was hard to miss, unless, of course, you didn't happen to gaze at the heavens late that night. This site explains what it is, in depth. The short version is that its a fairly common phenomena caused by the refraction of moonlight through upper-atmosphere ice crystals. When it does appear, it always has a diameter of 22 degrees.
