When first sighted at the waters edge about 10 days ago, the mallard hen had three ducklings at her side. As of yesterday, only one remained. Nature can't afford sentimentality; no doubt the ducklings served to help another mother (perhaps even the hawk) feed her progeny. It's a tough, anxious kind of life when you're a prey species.
